Before your first visit
Walking into a church for the first time can feel like a lot. Here's what usually happens.
How long is a service?
Usually about an hour, sometimes up to 90 minutes. There's often some singing, prayers, a reading from the Bible and a talk (the sermon).
What should I wear?
Whatever you're comfortable in. Many churches are casual; some dress up a bit more. Photos on a church's website usually give it away.
Do I have to give money?
No. If a plate or bag gets passed around, just pass it along. Guests aren't expected to give anything.
What if they share communion?
Some churches share bread and wine or juice. If you're not sure whether to take part, it's completely fine to let it pass, or to quietly ask someone near you.
Will I be put on the spot?
Most churches won't single you out. Sit wherever you like (the back is fine) and leave right after if you want to. If someone says hello, they're usually just being friendly.
What about my kids?
Many churches run kids' programs during the service. Look for a welcome or check-in desk, or ask at the door. Kids are almost always welcome to stay with you, too.
What if it isn't a fit?
That's normal. Churches really differ in style, size and feel, so it's okay to try a few. Going with a friend makes the first visit easier.
